About BMI and the Asian-Pacific classification
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a screening tool for weight categories. Research shows that Asian populations face higher health risks at lower BMIs than the WHO standard. The Asian-Pacific classification uses:
- < 18.5 — Underweight
- 18.5 – 22.9 — Normal
- 23 – 24.9 — Overweight (increased risk)
- 25 – 29.9 — Obese Class I (high risk)
- ≥ 30 — Obese Class II/III (very high risk)
This is the standard used by Philippine physicians for metabolic assessment.
